Description
A classic and easy Traditional Irish Soda Bread recipe that’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any day you crave a rustic and delicious homemade bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter, cooled slightly
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Add the buttermilk and cooled melted butter to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few streaks of flour are okay.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently shape it into a round, about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick.
- Place the dough on the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross into the top of the bread.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving. It’s best enjoyed slightly warm.
