Description

A fun and festive graduation cake that’s as silly as it is delicious. This layered cake is perfect for celebrating any graduate!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (gel-based)
  • Edible graduation caps (store-bought or homemade)
  • Gummy worms
  • Sprinkles (graduation-themed)
  • Edible glitter (optional)
  • Fondant (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  4. Gradually add the milk, eggs, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.
  5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then invert them onto wire racks to cool completely.
  8. While the cakes are cooling, make the buttercream frosting. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar and milk, mixing on low speed until well combined. Add the vanilla extract and mix again. Beat until light and fluffy.
  10. Divide the frosting into separate bowls and add food coloring to create different colors as desired.
  11. Once the cakes are completely cool, level them with a serrated knife if needed. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Frost with that.
  12. Place the second cake layer on top of the frosting. Frost the entire cake with the remaining buttercream.
  13. Decorate with edible graduation caps, gummy worms, sprinkles, edible glitter, and fondant decorations.
  14. Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes to allow the frosting to set before serving.
