- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup powdered sugar, for coating
Instructions
- 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- 4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract and red food coloring.
- 5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- 6. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight).
- 7. Roll the chilled dough into 1 inch balls. Generously roll each ball in powdered sugar, ensuring it’s fully coated.
- 8. Place the coated cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie.
- 9. Bake for 10 12 minutes.
- 10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
