Description

The most authentic and moist Red Velvet Cake made with a one-bowl method combining room temperature buttermilk eggs oil vinegar butter vanilla and red gel food coloring mixed into flour sugar cocoa powder salt and baking soda for the most classic Southern red velvet flavor paired with a tangy and creamy cream cheese frosting.


Ingredients

14 oz All-Purpose Flour

14 oz Granulated Sugar

2 tbsp Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

1 tsp Salt

1 tsp Baking Soda

2 large Eggs room temperature

4 oz Vegetable Oil

8 oz Buttermilk room temperature

1 tbsp White Vinegar

6 oz Unsalted Butter melted but not hot

1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract

1 tbsp Red Gel Food Coloring

12 oz Full-Fat Block Cream Cheese softened for frosting

8 oz Unsalted Butter softened for frosting

1/2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract for frosting

1/4 tsp Salt for frosting

26 oz Powdered Sugar sifted


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare two 8×2-inch round cake pans.

2. Combine eggs, oil, buttermilk, vinegar, melted butter, vanilla, and red food coloring in a bowl. Set aside.

3. Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda in stand mixer. Mix on low a few seconds.

4. With mixer on low pour liquid ingredients into dry. Increase to medium. Mix 30 seconds to 1 minute until smooth.

5. Scrape bowl. Divide batter evenly between pans.

6. Bake 35 to 40 minutes until toothpick clean and surface bounces back.

7. Cool in pans 10 minutes. Turn out. Freeze 1 hour before frosting.

8. For frosting: beat softened butter on low until smooth.

9. Add softened cream cheese on low until smooth.

10. Add sifted powdered sugar one cup at a time on lowest speed.

11. Add vanilla and salt. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.

12. Frost chilled cake layers. Garnish with red velvet crumbs pressed to sides if desired.
