Ingredients
Scale
- 1.25 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 0.75 cup yellow onion, finely diced
- 0.5 cup green bell pepper, finely diced
- 2 clove garlic, minced
- 0.75 cup ketchup
- 0.5 cup tomato sauce
- 0.25 cup tomato paste
- 0.25 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
- 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 8 slice Texas toast garlic bread
- 2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 0.25 cup fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil.
- Once heated, add the yellow onion and green bell pepper. Cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, for about 8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
- In a bowl, mix together the ketchup, tomato sauce, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, chili powder, smoked paprika, kosher salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
- Pour this sauce over the cooked beef mixture. Stir well and let it simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, prepare the Texas toast according to package instructions, adding butter for extra richness if desired.
- Once the toast is ready, top each slice with the sloppy joe mixture and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Place the cheesy toast back into the oven for a few minutes to melt the cheese.
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve warm.
Notes
For added depth of flavor, consider adding some diced tomatoes or jalapeños into the mixture. Adjust spice level to taste and use different types of cheese for variety.
