Description

A delightful dessert that combines the natural sweetness of berries with a crunchy, crumbly topping, perfect for any gathering or a simple treat at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen, do not thaw if frozen)
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar (for the filling)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the filling)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 0.75 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar (optional, for added sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into small cubes)
  • 0.5 cup chopped pecans (optional, for extra crunch)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the mixed berries with 0.5 cup granulated sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, vanilla extract, and cornstarch. Stir gently until the berries are well-coated.
  3. In another bowl, mix the rolled oats, flour, light brown sugar, optional granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and kosher salt. Add the cold butter cubes and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If using pecans, stir them in now.
  4. Pour the berry mixture into a baking dish and sprinkle the crisp topping over the berries. Bake for about 35-40 minutes until the topping is golden brown and berries are bubbling.
  5. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For best flavor, mix a variety of berries and adjust the sugar according to taste. Add nutmeg for extra flavor, and try almond extract or sliced apples for variations.
