  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

These Baked Greek Meatballs, or Soutzoukakia, are a flavorful Mediterranean delight! Tender meatballs simmered in a rich tomato sauce, perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs Ground Beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (plain or Italian seasoned)
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1/4 cup Red Wine (dry)
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp Dried Oregano
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Cumin
  • 1/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes (optional, for a little kick)
  • Salt and Black Pepper to taste
  • 1 (28 oz) can Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can Tomato Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1 tsp Sugar (optional, to balance acidity of tomatoes)

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. 2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, red wine, chopped onion, minced garlic, olive oil, oregano, cumin, cinnamon, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.
  3. 3. Use your hands to gently mix all the ingredients together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the meatballs tough.
  4. 4. Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs. Place them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. 5. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and lightly browned.
  6. 6. While the meatballs are baking, prepare the tomato sauce. In a large saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, tomato paste, and sugar (if using).
  7. 7. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. 8. Once the meatballs are baked, carefully transfer them into the simmering tomato sauce.
  9. 9. Let the meatballs simmer in the sauce for another 10-15 minutes, allowing them to absorb the flavors. Serve hot and enjoy!
